School context
At The Chiltern School, our Outdoor Learning opportunities aim to engage pupils in meaningful and purposeful teaching experiences using our wide range of outdoor spaces. We have three horticulture areas and a smallholding of animals accessed via a rotating timetable. Forest School sessions in Early Transitions, Phase 1 and Phase 2 are led by specialists. Outdoor features include a trim trail, climbing structures (ship and fort), sandpits, basketball hoops, a bike track, and two MUGA's. As the area special school, all 358 pupils have an EHCP, including 118 eligible for Free School Meals and 62 with English as an additional language. Our inclusive provision enriches every learner’s journey.
School goals and ambitions
Engaging in outdoor activities like weeding and watering not only supports well-being but also helps develop new skills and teamwork. These hands-on activities foster a deep respect for nature and encourage a sense of responsibility. Working together in natural environments can improve mood, reduce stress, and build confidence. Such experiences often inspire future career plans in areas like horticulture, environmental science, or animal care. By connecting with nature, learners gain practical knowledge, emotional resilience, and a clearer vision for their personal and professional growth. Outdoor Learning also supports emotional regulation and the development of fine and gross motor skills.
